Our Master Quilter

Reflections, Michelle Kaston, 2008
Michelle Kaston has been sewing for almost 30 years. Starting under the tutelage of her mother, making dresses for her dolls by hand, she developed a passion for sewing and fabric that led her to purchase her own sewing machine with the money earned from babysitting. And so began a life-long interest in textiles.

Spending much of her time learning the art of design, Michelle initially began inventing and creating her own clothes, from simple skirts to complex suits. In 1999, she was introduced to quilting, which opened up a new outlet for her artistic nature. "Fitting" was more about style and decor than tailoring. Working within the dimensions of quilting fueled her passion for working with fabric even more.

Michelle has spent years learning quilting techniques and developing styles that she feels fit her personality. More recently, she has been creating quilt patterns of her own that are "not like the ones you would find in your grandmother's attic." Her wealth of experience enables Michelle to create unique and unusual patterns suitable for a variety of home decors.

"I find such freedom in the creative outlet of designing and creating a quilt. There are really no rules to follow - I just make things that say what I want them to say."

Her voice, through quilting, has developed an incredible and distinctive style. With the goal of quilting full time, Michelle continues to create new quilts and patterns on a regular basis. She also teaches a variety of quilting courses and workshops throughout Michigan.
